Ontogenetic changes in the internal limitations to bean leaf photosynthesis part 2 activities of photosystems 1 and 2 and noncyclic photo phosphorylation and their dependence on photon flux density
Sestak, Z.; Zima, J.; Strnadova, H., 1977: Ontogenetic changes in the internal limitations to bean leaf photosynthesis part 2 activities of photosystems 1 and 2 and noncyclic photo phosphorylation and their dependence on photon flux density. Photosynthetica (Prague) 11(3): 282-290
The activities of Photosystem 1 (DCPIP [2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol, reduced] .fwdarw. MV [methyl viologen]) and Photosystem 2 measured as the Hill reaction (H2O .fwdarw. K3[Fe(CN)6]) and non-cyclic photophosphorylation in chloroplasts isolated from primary leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. throughout their life span show a general ontogenetic trend: a maximum after the unfolding of the leaf followed by a trough with a minimum in the time of finishing the leaf area expansion, a sharp 2nd maximum attained in intact plants usually after reaching the maximum amount of chlorophyll (a + b), and a 2nd trough sometimes relieved by a 3rd maximum preceding the end of photosynthetic activity of the leaf. The ratio of activities of Photosystem 1/Photosystem 2 declines during leaf ontogenesis. This general character of ontogenetic changes is not dependent on the bean cultivar (cv. Jantar or cv. Harzgruss), the length of life span of the leaf (decapitated or intact plants), the density of photon flux used for measurements (the same trend was found in the range 75-300 .mu.einstein/m2 per s, 400-700 nm), or the method of analysis (spectrophotometry or polarography, different electron donors for Photosystem 1). The shape of curves expressing the dependence of activities of Photosystem 1 or Hill reaction on the density of photon flux is different in various phases of ontogenesis.
