With these, aspiring teams for World Championships need to give it their all as Korea can only send three teams to World Championship. An LCK team can qualify for World Championships in one of the three ways:
The playoff winner of the
automatically qualifies as 1st seed for World Championships.
The team with the highest combined (Spring + Summer splits) championship point total after Summer split will qualify as 2nd seed for the World Championship.
The winner of Korean Regional Qualifier will qualify as the 3rd and final seed for World Championships.
LCK Season 5 | 2015 Format
OGN, keSPA and Riot Games Korea recently announced the 2015 reform plan on which Korean LoL will be played for the upcoming Season 5 | 2015. A lot of changes have been implemented for the league system in Korea, and it is going to be different from what it was in 2014. In essence, a league format has been adapted rather than a tournament format which will be played in splits, similar to the formats adopted in EU and NA. Moreover Riot Games introduced the new name League of Legend Champions Korea (short: LCK). Besides of the changes still 3 teams from the LCK are qualifying for the . The teams can qualify for LoL Worlds by either winning the , having the most Championship Points or by winning the .
The press release, which explained this format changed, claimed that the shift from tournament format to league format was adapted so that the teams could participate in competitions more consistently. The press release also went over a major disadvantage of this change (being less entertaining for watchers) and addressed this problem with adding a relegation/promotions tournament immediately after a split ends.
This should have two advantages, it will provide entertainment for fans as well as a chance for semi – pro teams to promote to the split. The threat of relegation will also keep teams on their toes as they play through the splits, providing as a stimulator for their dedication and hard work.
The reform plan did not end there, rather it had a lot of new rules and regulations as well. Along with adding rules for participants, it also added rules which implemented a minimum salary for all players. This should serve as an encourager to Korean players, who no longer will have to worry about fending for themselves while playing. The salary they will receive has been floored at KRW 20 million (~$18000), which should ensure that no improper abuse of players takes place.
A mandatory rooster and contract term regulation was also added, which should help in facilitating both the players and the league organizers from any unfortunate occurrences during the splits. As for the regulations themselves, the mandatory rooster requirement states that teams must have minimum 5 player roster if they want to participate in the league and all players must have their own accounts whereas the contract regulation levies that a minimum of one year contract be signed by every player in a team in order to ensure both the league’s stability while the player’s career stability as well.
Transfer policies remain the same as before, with the team acting as the principal agent for the duration of the contract and able to dispose the player off if they feel a need to do so. A small clause also states that if a team wishes to release a player against his wishes, they must pay the remainder of his salary if the player is still under contract period. All these regulations are pretty common and help in maintaining a general code of conduct as well as preserving the integrity of league, which allow everything to go along smoothly.
Riot also went ahead and explained their investment policy, claiming the 3 parties involved will continuously continue investing for the betterment of the league. Riot also claimed that they will be offering scholarship opportunities and paying the minimum salary for all 5 players in a team’s roster, whereas they will also offer help with “cost related to company operations and management” for non-sponsored teams. All of these measures will help encourage the growth of the eSports scene in Korea and also help develop LoL as a game in Korea over the years (even though it is still quite popular).
The challenger series name has also been changed, from NLB to LoL challengers Korea and this series has also received a bit of tweaks to help ensure that semi-pro players get a chance to go pro. As already stated, the top teams in this series will play the relegated teams in splits and the winner will proceed to the upcoming split, this will help both aspiring pros reach pro level while help relegated teams win their league status back.
Qualification and Relegation
To qualify for the first challenger series, any team above gold tier who has a 5 player rooster and meets the participant requirements can play the tournament, and upon finishing the matches, they will be graded on their performance. The top 4 teams will then go forward and play the two relegated teams (from the splits), upon which the remaining 2 split finalists will be decided. The challenger series will adopt a full league format in split of 2015 (Similar to the one of splits), since Riot did not want to rush everything up. The delay will provide a good opportunity for teams to settle down and decide about their future, and will also help reform the league system in Korea slowly but surely.
On the whole, the new reform plan is not bad for Korean eSports scene. Riot has shown that it cares for its pro players and added many safeguards for them, whereas the new format will mean that Korean region will be playing on a system similar to that of EU and NA, which will help achieve a global transition.
More about OGN League of Legends
In January 2012 OGN began to host a south korean tournament series for League of Legends. This tournament series called “the champions” is divided in 3 splits (Winter, Spring and Summer) and has a price pool of EUR 140.000.
Although OGN’s The Champions is very popular in South Korea it’s not very well known in the rest of the world. This might be due to the fact, that the is only available in Korean. To draw more international attention to the OGN League Riot Games has implemented the South Korean LoL Pro-League into the lolesports website. There you can find current standings and more. Moreover the top 3 teams in the OGN were competing in the . Two were qualifying to LoL Worlds directly due to the Circuit points earned over the 3 splits in Season 4 and the last team was determined from August 27th to August 30th in the OGN Regionals called “The Gauntlet”.
