LAPD Dive Unit
In operation since 1957, the LAPD Dive Unit is an elite team of underwater investigators/divers, boat operators, and bomb squad divers who have participated in the investigations of numerous underwater and land crime scenes, as well as homeland security sweeps. Divers have recovered significant amounts of stolen property, weapons used in crimes, aircrafts and bodies in various locations throughout the city of Los Angeles.

LAPD has partnered with The Pink Patch Project – a nationwide fundraising campaign to encourage public awareness about the fight against breast cancer, and the importance of early detection. Proceeds from the sales of LAPD pink patches and pink cancer ribbon lapel pins go toward research, care, and treatment, and benefit the City of Hope in Duarte. To Protect and To Serve
In February 1955, the Los Angeles Police Department, through the pages of the internally produced BEAT magazine, conducted a contest for a motto for the police academy. The conditions of the contest stated that: "The motto should be one that in a few words would express some or all the ideals to which the Los Angeles police service is dedicated. It is possible that the winning motto might someday be adopted as the official motto of the Department." The winning entry was the motto, "To Protect and to Serve" submitted by Officer Joseph S. Dorobek.
