Chapter 33 – SandbagsSandbags, or more generally any type of dead weight, can be really important for use and safety. As soon as you use sandbags regularly, you'll find them indispensable on a film set. They are helpful in a multitude of situations:
&Securing stands C-stands, light stands, and tripods are all stands that are commonly stabilized or held in place using sandbags. The dead weight holds the stand in place and minimizes vibration and possible toppling if the stand is bumped or struck.&Holding down cables When a cable must run along a walk path, placing a sandbag on each side will hold it close to the floor to prevent it from being easily tripped over. It someone does trip over it, the weight of the sandbag will help reduce the strength of the tug being directly transferred to the item where the cord is attached.&Camera mount For low camera shots, it is often possible to use a few sandbags to provide the proper cushioning and support the camera at the desired shot angle.&Stabilizing and blocking weight Sandbags are often place atop camera dollies and other surfaces to provide stabilizing weight. They are also used to block dolly wheels to prevent the dolly from moving between shots.&Standing or kneeling surface Whether an actor needs a height boost, to stand on a solid surface (despite soft ground), or kneel on a hard floor, sandbags provide a perfect temporary and relatively soft stage.&Platform leveling For anything that needs to be leveled (dolly track, tripods, furniture, etc.), placing one or more sandbags under the surface can help support the item and provide a level surface.
