blaze: With all the hype of the 4Kings in Korea, many players are wondering how the players are fairing in their travels. Today I have with me the man -- nay, the legend! -- 4K.Zeus[19]. Zeus has traveled over to Korea along with teammates Grubby, FuRy and ToD to compete in some of the most prestigious leagues in Korea.
blaze: Hi there Zeus! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
4K^Zeus[19]: Hi Blaze! My name is Ivica Markovic and I come from Croatia. I've been gaming since I was 14 with many breaks due to school, real life, phone bills, etc. I started with Starcraft then switched to Broodwar, and after that to War3 Reign of Chaos.
blaze: Tell us something about Zeus that most people wouldn't know.
4K^Zeus[19]: Tough one... Oh well I snore and I like to joke a lot. Some may see it as bad manner, but those who know me know it's not.
blaze: How much time did you spend on Starcraft back in the day? Were you as serious about it as you are about Warcraft?
4K^Zeus[19]: Yeah, I played fanatically, many hours a day. I even skipped lots of school for it. I hoped to get to Korea to progame, but because Croatia had no WCG I remained known in Europe in Broodwar but unknown outside of it.
blaze: What attracted you to progaming in the first place?
4K^Zeus[19]: Well, some friends dragged me to a local PC café to play some Duke Nukem. I played that some, and after year or so started going with them more often and then Starcraft came out, and I was hooked.
blaze: So why the switch from Broodwar to Warcraft?
4K^Zeus[19]: The fact that I realized that I wouldn't be able to go progame in Korea just because of the simple reason that there was no WCG or ability to go to any major tournaments to prove my worth. And Broodwar kinda died in the European tournament scene.
blaze: As you are looked upon as one of the best Night Elf players in Europe (and possibly the world), strategizing is a huge part of your game. Do you have a staple strategy that you use against all races, or do you have specific ones for each race and each map?
4K^Zeus[19]: One of best in Europe yeah, but in the world, definitely not. There are many good Night Elves and all of them can parry any time (this applies to Korean progamer Night Elves, sorry Euro). Strategy-wise, I play many games and try different stuff, and if I start losing then I think of a strategy to win with, and I do it. I did that when I practiced with FoV and lost many games. Then I came up with a good strat, and won many. That was before my game against ReiGn.
I don't have 1 strat to rule them all, maybe I used to use BeastMaster before, but hey, who didn't? I have specific strategies for each race and map, yes. But also, a very important part of the game is adapting, so basically I do the strategy that I thought of and then just adapt during the game.
blaze: Which match up is hardest for you?
4K^Zeus[19]: Night Elf versus Night Elf. I dunno why, I just never really try to make a strategy to win against them since I find that matchup really annoying. Oh well, aren't all mirrors lame?
blaze: It is known throughout the community that many gosus use custom hotkeys and the like. Do you do the same?
4K^Zeus[19]: I don't think it's commonly known that gosus use custom hotkeys, some use them and some don't. I personally don't.
blaze: Can you tell us a bit about your groupings, then?
4K^Zeus[19]: Sure, I use 1 and 2 for hero + mixed army, 3 is my Ancient of War, 4 is my Altar, 5 is my Tree of Life, and that's it.
blaze: Do you feel that Warcraft is balanced as of yet? Many players complain of certain imbalances and flaws in the game. Do you agree or disagree with them?
4K^Zeus[19]: It's close to become balanced. I would remove Wand of Lightning Shield and Healing Wards. Rest is up to map advantage of a certain race. Generally I think it's not bad as it was before.
blaze: Now that we have the basics out of the way, I feel that it's time to delve deeper into the mind of Zeus. As we now know, RTS games were nothing new to you when you began playing RoC and TFT. How quickly did you pick up the game?
4K^Zeus[19]: Pretty fast I think, I already had experience as you say, so it wasn't really hard for me. Only problem that stopped me in RoC was a shitty connection to the internet back then, (note that I played on a 56k modem for all of RoC), and disconnecting from the internet frequently due to too high phone bills. Living in Croatia and being a gamer isn't an easy thing, never was and never will be, but what can you do? I love my country, would never leave it.
blaze: After you got yourself really into the game, you were recruited by one of the best clans out there today, 4Kings. How did you come about joining them?
4K^Zeus[19]: I was part of eSu in Broodwar, and when I made a switch I decided to make a War3 team. So I made one, where we earned a pretty high rank in the WC3L in season 1 or 2, I can't remember. Things looked really good for the team until some rumors about problems with sponsors arose, and that the team was going to die. So Didi, KaJ, Kiko and I were approached at a Clikarena tournament by Tillerman and Zommy (the 4K clan director). We told them we couldn't leave our team without talking to them [the eSu leaders] and seeing the actual future of it. We left eSu a few weeks after we got the offer.
blaze: ..and joined up with the current dynasty that is 4K. So you guys are in Korea now, which is a HUGE step forward for European War3 progamers. How has your experience there been as of late?
4K^Zeus[19]: Well, it has been great. I've met many interesting people, living away from home in a foreign country with people met over internet that I only met few times in real life for few days. And now I end up living with them for three months or more.
And of course, I've been playing the best players in the world, improving my skills. At the moment, we're playing in the two most prestigious TV leagues in Warcraft [MBC and OnGameNet]. I've kinda done what I always wanted to do, experiencing the life of a progamer in Korea, as well as learn the Asian way of life.
blaze: At the moment, things seem to be looking good for you guys. After taking a hit during the first few weeks in Korea, your results are looking amazing. 4K as a whole has been winning most of their MBC and OGN games, and you personally have just beaten one of the best Undead players in the world in Cherry-ReiGn. How does that make you and your team feel?
4K^Zeus[19]: Well, we didn't show our real skill in the first matches against the Koreans. After those hits, we practiced even harder after we knew our opponents and tried to get ready for them. That resulted in pretty good score for us. We were very happy about it.
About my game versus Cherry-ReiGn, I gotta thank FoV a lot for practicing with me and beating me to a pulp and forcing me to come up with a strategy. That strategy is and was a winner against him and ReiGn. The moment that I beat FoV few times with it, I knew it would be what I had to do to win. Luckily, it worked.
blaze: Do you think that 4K will be able to continue their streak?
4K^Zeus[19]: The streak has already been broken, but we will fight our best in further matches for sure. After all, we're playing against best who are used to playing on TV and this level of competition all the time, so it's not easy, but we try our best.
blaze: Which players do you think represent each race the best? And secondly, which player do you respect the most for their play?
4K^Zeus[19]: Umm, I'd say Grubby/Zacard for Orcs, Night Elf is Spirit_Moon (who is the only one which I think is unique), for Humans I'd say ToD/Cara/Kenshin, and Undead is FoV.
I'd say I respect Spirit_Moon the most since he's so cool. He does really fun strats and that's what I like about him, besides the fact he's Night Elf player.
blaze: How has it been living in an apartment with a few guys that you really haven't gotten to know much offline?
4K^Zeus[19]: Pretty cool. Besides, we're getting along well so it's good. Sometimes it's not easy but it is totally different from home life of course, and I don't think anyone on the team regretted that he came here.
blaze: I think everyone is dying to know the answer to this next one: Which one of you snores the most?
4K^Zeus[19]: Not me!
blaze: Tell us a little bit about your teammates and how you guys get along. Anybody have any weird quirks?
4K^Zeus[19]: My teammates rock! Every each one of them has a different personality which totally makes us a perfect crew! Me and FuRy like sports, Grubby likes books, ToD likes to wander on his own sometimes, FoV learned a lot of English while we were here, and Annie, our manager, is also a cool guy who tried to adapt to us.
blaze: After your experience in Korea with the rest of your squad, do you think that you'll ever go back?
4K^Zeus[19]: Yeah, I think I will go back, just a question of when and for what.
blaze: What was your most rewarding experience in Korea?
4K^Zeus[19]: Experiencing the TV matches, the excitement before the match and during it, also living the life of a progamer in Korea generally.
blaze: I have a few questions from members of our staff that have been dying for some answers.
Frvade: Why did you choose the Greek god Zeus as opposed to any other god? Besides the fact that you're king of course.
4K^Zeus[19]: Well, I chose it because I liked how it sounded and I've always loved Greek mythology. Plus he was top God in Greek mythology. Coolest one!
Metellus: How does your style differs from that of other professional players and why does this give you an advantage?
4K^Zeus[19]: I don't really know, maybe I don't try to do what everyone is doing, i.e. copying or playing mass games to perfect something. I try to adapt and do what I feel is good in the game that I am playing. If I think I have a good strategy I will try it, even if I lose. Sometimes it works like a charm, sometimes it doesn't!
nOnAmE: What has happened to KaJ and LaWn? Are they still part of 4K?
4K^Zeus[19]: They are still part of 4K, just not as active as before, KaJ is occupied with school, LaWn too, they are still playing for fun as far as I know.
Magess: What's the most satisfying strategy to beat?
4K^Zeus[19]: Hmmm... I have a lot of fun when I defeat Undead players who make Ghoul/Garg timing attack. Tower rushing Orcs are also a lot of fun to beat.
VVoLF: All rivalry aside, do you think HeMaN is hot? (Please realize that VVoLF isn't playing with a full deck of cards here.)
4K^Zeus[19]: I think VVoLF's mom is hot. All rivalry aside.
